The Green Party's Susan Gallagher has resigned from Waterford Council.
The WIT lecturer was co-opted onto the council in June 2020 following the resignation of Laura Swift, who had replaced Marc O’Cathasaigh following his election to Dail Eireann.
Ms Swift was forced to resign her role as public representative after her employer informed her the role was not compatible with her work in the Family Mediation Service.
In a letter to Waterford Green Party members, Susan Gallagher, who is a lecturer in Sustainable Civil Engineering in Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), also stipulated work reasons for her resignation:
"The role of a councillor is interesting and very rewarding, but it’s not a part-time job. I would love to continue with it, but I can’t find the time to do the job effectively, while continuing with my role in WIT.
"My colleagues in WIT and I are currently working to improve the sustainability aspects of our courses, so it would be unwise for me to walk away from that work now.”
Cllr Gallagher will formally relinquish her role on September 24.
The Green Party is currently working to select a candidate for co-option onto the Council.
