Gardaí in Waterford are urging the public to be aware of romance scams.

There have been recent high profile cases of people falling victim to fake dating profiles - with many suffering significant financial loss.

Last week, it emerged a French woman was conned out of €830,000 by scammers posing as actor Brad Pitt.

Crime Prevention Officer at Waterford Garda Station, Sergeant Deirdre O'Neill, says such scams are becoming more and more sophisticated.

"It's widespread and it's really under reported," she said. "A lot of people feel embarrassed. It's a significant and damaging offence for people to endure."

Sgt O'Neill said "teams of people" are often working on targeting individuals.

She outlined some of the reasons which are often put forward for seeking money.

These include: to cover the cost of travelling to see the victim; for emergency medical expenses for the scammer or a family member — typically a child; •a business opportunity which would allow them to live together comfortably.
