Gardai in Waterford will hold a minute's silence on Sunday, as a mark of respect following the death of their colleague, Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

He was shot dead in Castlerea, Co Roscommon on Wednesday night and a man remains in custody in connection with the murder.

Waterford Chief Superintendent Padraig Dunne says there will be a parade outside each garda station at midday on Sunday to coincide with his funeral.

"The funeral is on in Charlestown, Co Mayo on Sunday. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions there will not be large groups of An Garda Siochana attending.

"However, what is happening nationwide and what will be happening in the Waterford Division is that each garda station, where members are working at 12 midday on Sunday, they will parade outside the station in uniform and hold one minute silence, in memory of our fallen colleague.

"For Waterford, there will be one minute's silence here at Waterford Garda Station, at Dungarvan station, Tramore station and at the smaller stations throughout the county where members are working."
