Gardai in Waterford are urging people to be on the alert for scams in the wake of the cyber-attack on the HSE.

They say fraudsters are attempting to take advantage of the current fear and concern among the public.

They're encouraging people not to engage with cold callers, download apps or click on links, and instead contact Waterford, Dungarvan or Tramore Garda Station.

It's understood that some of the calls circulating over the past few days included peoples personal information and Brendan Roche, Crime Prevention Sgt with the Waterford Division says that it's vital people don't confirm any information to the fraudsters.

"The HSE situation has presented an opportunity for these fraudsters to ring people and prey on their vulnerability but unfortunately that's only one aspect of the fraud that's online at the moment.

"We also have Amazon callers, there are people calling to say you've signed up for a subscription and asking people for bank details.

"The most important thing people need to remember is not to confirm or release any information to these people if they call you on the phone," Sgt Roche said.

Meanwhile, fraudulent calls relating to vaccination appointments are also continuing and Sgt Roche is reminding people that you will never be required to give bank details when it comes to getting a Covid-19 jab.

"If it's something that relates to a medical appointment - you can turn around and check that with your GP.

If somebody rings you put the phone down, don't give away any information, contact your bank immediately if you give away any details and the bank will refuse it, and contact your local Garda Station," he said.
