Waterford Food Bank to benefit from Harvest Festival

Waterford Food Bank to benefit from Harvest Festival

Waterford Food Bank distributes over 200 food parcels every week to individuals and families living in food poverty in Waterford.

Each food parcel contains items such as bread, tea, cereal, tinned food, vegetables, eggs and other basic food stuffs.

This year, they have teamed up with Waterford Harvest Festival to feed those in need, but not in the way you might think..

The Re-Turn Deposit Scheme will be used to turn old bottles and cans into cash receipts to stock the food bank.

Deposit bins are located throughout the festival, where it's hoped festival goers will dispose of their empty bottles and cans.

"It was absolutely brilliant to be invited by the Waterford Harvest Festival to be their  sustainability partners this year. We had launched the return bottle of scheme a few weeks ago, and for this to have come on our doorstep now it's just fantastic.

"It's a great opportunity to fund-raise in a socially, responsible and sustainability way. I just think it goes hand in hand with the festival."

Mark Dunne, Waterford Festival Director added they are delighted to be on board.

" We all know the return scheme on bottles and cans that has been brought in by the government. So this year we're going to have bin stations set  up all around the city.

"We'll have fourteen different bin stations, and we're encouraging people to donate  their waste cans and waste bottles and in turn the Waterford Food Bank can take them and turn them into food vouchers that will help support their activities that they're doing within the city at the moment."

The Harvest Festival runs for the next two days across Waterford City Centre, with hundreds of food offerings and entertainment. Join WLR live from all the action tomorrow from 1:00 p:m - 4:00 p:m .
