Waterford Crystal will be the most watched brand on the planet tonight.

More than a billion people are expected to tune in when the Times Square Ball drops in New York at midnight.

The ball itself is 12 feet in diameter and is designed in Waterford by Martin Ryan. It comes in at six tonnes in weight with approximately 32,000 LED lights capable of generating over 16 million light combinations. It is the product of the Times Square Alliance and Waterford Crystal, which has been maintaining it for 20 years.

Waterford native Tom Brennan is ambassador and spokesperson for Waterford Crystal in North America. He is a second generation glass-blower following on from his father Leo Brennan.

"Little did I know, learning my craft back in the 1980s, as an apprentice glassblower that I would be here...today as the ambassador for Waterford Crystal.

"[It's] pretty good now for our city of Waterford to be on that world stage."

"A total of 2,668 Waterford Crystal triangles or panels are on the actual ball. Each year 192 of those are replaced with a brand new pattern, with this year's design pineapples.

"This year's theme is goodwill," Tom added, "they've got these beautiful intricately cut pineapples and of course the pineapple of the symbol hospitality and has been for centuries so we're very proud to introduce this new theme.
