Waterford Councillor Declan Clune has announced that he has left Sinn Fein after 18 years with the party.

The Comeragh District representative issued a statement saying he has made the difficult decision to resign as a member of Sinn Fein.

He says he intends to remain an independent councillor on the local authority for the remainder of this term.

Councillor Clune was first elected in 2014.

Please be advised that I have made the difficult decision to resign as a member of Sinn Fein.

It is my intention to remain an independent Councillor on Waterford City & County Council for the remainder of this term.

I would like to thank all the friends and colleagues that I have worked with in Waterford Sinn Fein over the last 18 years and wish them all the very best for the future.
