Waterford Councillor, Eddie Mulligan, has announced his resignation from Waterford City and County Council.

The Fianna Fáil Councillor has been a member of the council since he was elected in 2014.

A spokesperson for the party had told WLR earlier today that they were expecting a statement from Councillor Mulligan this evening.

Councillor Mulligan has now taken to his social media where he has said he will be resigning because he is accepting a paid position within the local authority.

He will take up a one-year contract as the Waterford Local Community Safety Partnership Coordinator and because of this he can no longer continue as a sitting councillor.

Councillor Mulligan says the job was secured following a competitive recruitment process.

In his statement, he says it has been "an honour and a privilege to represent the people of Waterford" and, in particular, those in his own electoral area of Waterford City East for the past eight years.

He says he feels he has "fulfilled the role of a public representative diligently and professionally with a high work rate, committed to the best representation I could give for the people that elected me."

The former 2020 General Election candidate says he's hoping people will understand his decision to take up this contract.

He is a previous Vice Chair and Chair of the Joint Policing Committee and has been a member of a number of community groups, promoting safety.

In conclusion, Councillor Mulligan says he would like to "thank everyone who has supported me to date during my time as an elected representative."

His resignation brings to two the number of seats on the council that Fianna Fáil now find themselves having to fill; the first having arisen with the untimely death of Deputy Mayor, James Tobin in July.

It's expected that Councillor Tobin's seat will be filled by the September meeting of the council.
