People in Waterford are being asked to 'shine a light' to remember crash victims, and survivors tonight.

Council buildings across the country will light up for road safety today as part of this year's World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims.

And they're asking the public to join in between 7pm and 8pm tonight by lighting a candle in a window.

According to the Road Safety Authority, 514 people have lost their lives on Waterford's roads since 1961.

So far there have been 127 deaths on the roads this year - 11 more than last year.

Brian Farrell is from the Road Safety Authority: "It's an important day for us to reflect out of respect for those who have been killed, the families left behind.

"With our own behavior, we can make small changes to our road safety habits"

Jemma Jacob is Waterford Council's Road Safety Officer: "We're asking drivers to slow down and especially at this time year. We have a lot of people out walking, a lot of people on their bikes trying to get a bit of exercise in.

"In the evening it's dark and we're asking people to wear high-vis so you are seen on the road."
