Waterford contracts for State provided accommodation set to be terminated

Waterford contracts for State provided accommodation set to be terminated

Contracts for the provision of State funded accommodation in Waterford are among those being terminated nationwide.

Earlier this year, it emerged that many accommodation centres for Ukrainian refugees are set to close.

There are a number of locations in Waterford where such accommodation is being provided for people from Ukraine who are beneficiaries of temporary protection.

WLR News understands some of these providers have now received notification in relation to the termination of contracts and politicians have also been updated on the situation.

The Department of Integration was asked by WLR what this would mean for those who are currently residing in such premises.

"The Department is reducing the number of contracts for accommodation for people fleeing the war in Ukraine for a number of reasons, including a decrease in numbers needing accommodation, compliance concerns, value for money and greater oversight of the portfolio," a spokesperson said.

"The Department cannot discuss individual contracts. Contracts are being ended on a regular basis at present, as part of the consolidation of the beneficiaries of temporary protection accommodation portfolio.

In terms of moving people, every effort is being made to keep those who have fled the war in Ukraine, as local as possible.  However, given the number of moves that are taking place, this is not always possible. People affected who wish to stay in the area are welcome to make their own arrangements, including through pledged accommodation. Due to the scale involved, the only factors that can be considered when allocating follow-on accommodation are HSE assessed medical needs.

The Department appreciates that this is not easy for people and that moving location can be very disruptive, but at all times the Department was clear that State-funded accommodation is temporary and subject to change."
