Communions and confirmations will go ahead in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore in mid-august.

That's according to Fr. Liam Power Parish Priest at St Joseph and Benildus Parish in Waterford City.

It comes as the Irish Independent reports that the Bishop of Elphin announced that he would hold confirmations and communions in the coming days.

In June, the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore Alphonsus Cullinan stated that the sacraments of Communion, Confirmation and Baptism in the diocese would be pushed forward until at least the autumn.

But speaking to Damien Tiernan on Déise Today, Fr Liam Power said the archbishops have decided to challenge the government.

"Communions and confirmations in our diocese will go ahead in the middle of August after the four archbishops wrote to the government on Tuesday stating the sacraments may resume in some parishes.

"I suppose it indicates a level of frustration in the way the government have been treating the church here, they haven't given any indications," Fr Power said.
