Waterford City and County Council Budget 2024 approved

The Waterford City and County Council's budget for 2024 has been passed by an overwhelming majority.

Councillors met yesterday at city hall to discuss the forthcoming year's budget, with all agreeing to the proposals.

An additional  €500,000 will be given towards housing maintenance. Roads are to receive an extra 500 thousand for materials and contracts.

Derelict sites are important in this year's budget, with the compulsory acquisition of over 80 buildings.

The council is also proposing an increase of 1% in rates for businesses, but the local authority says nearly 80% of those would be eligible for a grant to counteract the increase if they engage in the councils climate change programme.

Local government funding of 1.5 million euro has also been welcomed, but the government supports received last year for rising energy costs have been discontinued leaving this figure at €400,000.

Climate change has also been given €250,000 to be used for grants for small and medium-sized commercial ratepayers who engage with the councils climate team.

Public toilets have been given an additional €30,000 to deal with increased demand across the county.
