Director of Roads, Water and Environmental Services with Waterford Council, Fergus Galvin, says they have a number of measures in place:

"We're in a period at the moment of high spring tides and with a storm surge brought on by the high winds there would be a risk to places like Passage and Waterford City

"We're taking the precaution of closing the flood gates around places like Poleberry, Waterside and the Quays to make sure there's no risk of flooding to the City or the Quays.

He's appealing to people to stay away from exposed coasts:

"You'll have very high tides in the early morning accompanied by very high wave heights driven on by the storm surge as the morning goes on.

"We would be asking people to stay away well away from exposed coastal areas like piers, sea walls, harbours.

"That's where the highest wind speeds will be felt and the worst potential impact of the storm will be felt."

Fergus Galvin says driving conditions will be hazardous this morning and afternoon:

"We would be advising people to take extreme caution if they're out driving because there's a risk of flying debris from branches or trees or power lines coming down."

He asked people to contact them if they come across any fallen trees or debris on the road, the number is 0761 10 20 20.
