Ryanair Boss, Michael O'Leary has quashed any plans for Ryanair scheduling flights out of Waterford Airport, in the airline's quarterly press conference in the UK.

Waterford Airport opened in 1981, with Ryanair operating its first scheduled flight four years later.

When asked by a reporter at the Sky News press conference, "Will you be going back to Waterford to celebrate the 40th anniversary?", O'Leary seemed confused, responding, "Who? Oh yeah..", before asking his colleague Áine to answer the question.

"There's a nice road up to Dublin, and it's not that far away. There's plenty of flights out of Dublin."

O'Leary did answer however saying that he wishes Waterford Airport well in the future.

" It's about an hour from Cork Airport. We have said, and there's a bunch of local lunatics there who are determined to get a government grant to build a jet runway, we said if we get a jet runway and there was a low-cost base, i.e. it was free, we might put one or two flights a day back in there from London, but really it's in the catchment area of Cork and Dublin and therefore I think it has no commercial future, economic future, but we wish them well."

The comments come following a set of pushbacks to the development of Waterford Airport, including doubts from former Government Ministers.

More recently, the new programme for Government does have a commitment to the development of the airport.

In collaboration with the Bolster Group, Comer Group International announced that it will invest €12 million in Waterford Airport. The government is expected to match the investment.
