A Sinn Féin Councillor in Waterford says people walking between Passage East and Woodstown need to be aware of the risk of landslide.

Mud and soil could be seen at the base of a cliff near Passage in recent days, and people are being urged to be particularly cautious following stormy weather and heavy rain.

It comes as a nationwide status yellow wind and rain warning will come into effect from 3 o'clock this afternoon in Waterford, until the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Local Cllr Pat Fitzgerald says it's a common occurrence in the area however the most recent landslide is particularly noticeable.

"Normally at this time of the year with the heavy rain we get a lot of small landslides along the soft bank of the river between Woodstand Strand and the village of Passage.

"This one however was quite a big one that can be seen quite clearly from the road as you're driving towards Passage from the Dunmore East area.

He says the route is popular with walkers, and people should take particular care if they use the route.

"It's caused by a combination of the waves at the bottom of the soft cliff and the heavy rain on top. 90% of the cliff would be known as a 'soft cliff' which means it's only soil.

"It's quite high and would be always considered dangerous at this time of year even with slippage. People who are walking on top of the cliff or underneath the cliff really should be aware of this."
