Government working to introduce ban on single-use vapes

Plans are in place from the Irish government would could lead to a ban on the sale of single-use vape products.

A public consultation process is set to get underway in the coming weeks, which will likely outlaw them.

Minister of State for Public Procurement and eGovernment, Ossian Smyth TD, says that disposable vapes 'go against everything that we are trying to do in Ireland'.

"This is an example of an innovation that is making the world worse. It's a product that is attractive to children, tastes like bubblegum, you smoke it for maybe 50 drags, and then it gets thrown on the ground."

Disposable vapes pose a serious environmental hazard as they contain lithium-ion batteries, electronics, copper and plastic - with many images circulating online of the affects this can have on landfill sites.

The EU's executive branch had proposed regulations on the sale of flavoured heated tobacco products earlier this year, as part of a wider bid to combat cancer.

The European Commission says its in response to a significant increase in the volume of these items sold across the continent.

According to the Irish Vape Vendors Association, there are currently almost 200,000 vapers in Ireland.
