UPMC has acquired the Whitfield Clinic in Waterford, as well as full control of the cancer centre that it has operated at the hospital through a joint venture for the past 12 years.

It's the largest private hospital in the South-East with more than 50 consultants and 180 employees.

UPMC is a 16 billion dollar world-renowned health care provider and insurer. Its president Chuck Bogosta paid tribute to the excellent staff and leadership at Whitfield and said it will provide a solid foundation for their plans to grow high-quality health care services throughout the country.

Ireland country manager and UPMC Vice President David Beirne said they anticipate adding needed services and employment at the Waterford campus in the coming years.

They already provide orthopaedics, ophthalmology, oncology, endoscopy and other surgical specialties.

The cancer centre in Waterford has treated more than 17,000 patients with the most advanced radiation therapy since 2006. It also has access to research and expertise available at the academic hub in Pittsburgh.
