UPDATE:
There are no major changes at University Hospital Waterford as a result of a Covid-19 outbreak at the acute hospital, according to hospital management.
The General Manager Grace Rothwell confirmed on Wednesday that visiting restrictions remain in place with no changes. Scheduled admissions and inter-hospital transfers will continue and "every effort will be made to contain the outbreak and minimise the impact on scheduled and unscheduled care".
An outbreak is defined as two or more cases. It's understood this is the first time, however, transmisson has occured between a patient and staff member.
In a statement issued to WLR News on Tuesday evening a spokesperson for UHW said:
"University Hospital Waterford wishes to confirm that a number of positive Covid 19-cases have been identified at the hospital.
"An outbreak control team is on-site actively managing the situation and have implemented all the appropriate Covid control and management protocols."
According to the HSE Daily Operations Update issued at 8pm on Tuesday evening, there are six patients being treated with the virus on site, with a further two suspected cases.
