Fears have emerged that Amgen, the US biotech giant, will dramatically scale back a planned one billion euro campus in Waterford.

In a statement to the Business Post, the company said it would carry out a "network wide evaluation" to assess whether it would proceed with the investment which was due to add 350 high paid jobs to the city.

On Friday, the company announced it had completed its €26 billion takeover of Horizon Therapeutics.

Horizon was awarded planning permission for a Waterford campus at a cost of almost one billion euro which was set to become Horizon's global headquarters.

However, following Horizon's takeover, Amgen now says that the Waterford site is part of its global network and manufacturing supply operations will be evaluated.
