Two Waterford TDs  involved in negotiations on the Programme for Government say there is a commitment to enhancing "timely access" to cardiovascular services across all the regions.

Fianna Fáil's Mary Butler and Fine Gael's John Cummins were responding to comments from Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane who claimed there was no commitment to delivering 24/7 cardiac care at UHW and just a "vague" mention of Waterford Airport.

While admitting there is no specific mention of UHW, Minister Mary Butler said the Programme for Government commits to "building on the existing national cardiovascular policy".

Quoting from the text, she said: "We will enhance patient care and timely access across all the regions".

Minister Butler added: "We will deliver a new and more ambitious plan enhancing patient care and timely access across all regions. We pushed that very, very hard."

She added that Deputy Cummins was "very strong" on the inclusion of the word "regions".
