The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 at University Hospital Waterford has fallen to two.

For the first time in several weeks there are no patients with the virus in intensive care.

A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed to WLR News that as of 7 o'clock this morning there are two positive cases on site and that a further 11 patients are awaiting the results of testing.

Elsewhere the Chief Medical Officer says the country isn't yet in a position to begin easing COVID-19 restrictions, but he's hopeful that will change over the next 10 days.

1,375 people with the virus have died after a further 37 deaths were confirmed last night, while there are now 22,248 diagnosed cases.

There was no new increase in cases announced in Waterford, as of midnight on Monday there were 139 confirmed cases since the outbreak began.

From May 18th, the gradual lifting of measures is due to begin, with the return of outdoor workers and the reopening of DIY stores and garden centres among the first phase of measures.

Dr Tony Holohan has again stressed that is not guaranteed, but noted that trends - such as the number of people being admitted to hospital with coronavirus - are currently moving in 'the right direction'.

"We're seeing that the number of people in ICU is continuing to reduce, the number of new cases going in is falling, we're seeing trends moving in the right direction.

"I won't sit here today and say we're going to be in a position on the 18th of May, if the conditions were today I think we're still not at that point, but I am hopeful."
