'Tree of hope' planted for those affected by suicide

A Tree of Hope has been planted at the People's Park in Waterford city to create a special place for people who have lost loved ones to suicide.

The tree is intended to be a symbol of hope and solidarity with those struggling with suicidal thoughts, a place to pause and remember them.

The planting was organised by the Darkness into Light committee in Waterford who are encouraging people to participate in One Sunrise Together on Saturday morning.

People can’t gather together as usual for Darkness Into Light but they are being asked to walk with their own family or friends; pick a route and walk into the sunrise simultaneously, starting from 4.15am.

Organiser Jo Cregan is asking people to help raise funds to keep lifesaving services running across Waterford:

"This past year has been so tough for so many especially those experiencing mental ill health, isolation, unemployment and uncertainty, perhaps for the first time. Help us keep HOPE alive and remind others there is always brighter days ahead. You are never alone. During the darkest times, we are brighter together."
