A Waterford councillor is questioning the wisdom of a traffic management system put in place to facilitate a development that may not happen.

One-way systems direct traffic from the city centre along Hennessy's road and out onto Bunkers (Manor) Hill.

Three sets of traffic lights on the hill add to the bottleneck and can cause long delays at times.

Local Cllr Frank Quinlan says the hold-ups are resulting in huge frustration for motorists.

"In the area of Poleberry, Newgate Street, Convent Hill, Browns Lane and up through the Applemarket- everyone is merging onto Bunkers hill.

"If you're at a hurling match in Thurles and you've one entrance to go out and the crowds all gather at the one entrance - that's exactly what it's like.

"It's causing a lot of anxiety to people and people are very frustrated with the systems in place and I feel it could be alleviated with one or two changes," Cllr Quinlan said.

The local Cllr said it was put in place to aid Michael Street development.

"It's due to the proposed regeneration of that area and traffic management plans were put in place to guide people away from the area.

"As we well know now, that development is not likely to happen anytime soon.

"At the moment all different areas of the city are all merging into one place and there are three sets of traffic lights," he said.

In response, an Executive Engineer with Waterford Council says they would assess the current traffic light system in place on Manor Street.
