Waterford delegation seek meeting with TII on funding cuts

Waterford delegation seek meeting with TII on funding cuts

Councillors in the Comeragh District have called for a meeting with Transport Infrastructure Ireland in the wake of recent funding cuts.

TII projects at Carrolls Cross and in Lismore have seen funding disappear in recent weeks, a move which has angered locals.

Fianna Fail Councillor John O'Leary raised the issue at this month's Comeragh District meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

He was particularly disappointed about how he learnt of the funding cut.

"Government provides the money to TII, TII decides to do a u-turn on promised allocation, that's quite embarrassing actually for a local representative to see it in the media, and to see announcements made that funding, roads, works are going to be carried out and be done, and all of a sudden then we get this re-allocation, so I'm saying that is an unacceptable position for us - for me as a local representative certainly, in relation to TII."

Fine Gael Councillor for the Comeragh District, Liam Brazil says it will only worsen road safety issues in years ahead.

He called on TII to meet with a delegation from Waterford City and County Council.

"I'm disappointed to see that TII have taken funding off the main N25, this road was badly in need of doing because if this is not done this year it's going to affect us going forward. We used to always get the chance to go to Dublin to meet TII. Is there any chance that we could go and look for that meeting back and see why was the money taken from the N25 and why was it taken from Lismore as well? It's all the one county at the end of the day, it might be a different district - but at the same time, I think this is disappointing."

Senior Engineer for Roads with the local authority, Gabriel Hynes, agreed to arrange a meeting.

"Certainly, we can arrange a delegation to go to Dublin to meet with TII, I can action that."
