A Waterford man, accompanied by his daughter Ava and wife Kandice has attended an audience with President Joe Biden.

Three year old Ava Barron is the granddaughter of Cllr. Ger Barron and niece of Waterford mayor Cllr. John O'Leary.

Ava, who overcame kidney cancer to become a little girl in love with life, was referenced by Mr Biden in his speech after Mr Barron had written to the president to thank him for inspiring them.

The Waterford man explained he first met Mr Biden when he was invited to the launch of the Cancer Moonshot programme in the White House early last year.

That invitation came after Mr Barron wrote a personal letter to Mr Biden, telling him the president's family had "inspired" the Barrons while their daughter was battling cancer.

Along with her mother and her father, Maurice, she attended the launch of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative.

Young Ava is currently in remission from cancer and enjoyed time in the movie room of the White House while there.

President Biden told Maurice that he is planning to visit Ireland soon, saying 'I'm planning to go home soon.'
