Derry Girls and Bridgerton actor Jamie Beamish will be the first artist to take up residency at the Theatre Royal this week.

The Waterford man says it happens to coincide with the 30th anniversary of his first time on stage at the venue.

Jamie told WLR's Geoff Harris that the Theatre Royal will always hold a special place in his heart.

"I have 9 months where I can use the Theatre Royal to create a new piece of theatre. They've given me the keys and it's an amazing thing to have access to all these amazing resources. The theatre really means so much to me."

The success of Jamie's recent play 'Ghosting', is what led to the opportunity. The opportunity will also coincide with how its almost 30 years to the day since Beamish first took to the Theatre Royal stage.

"I came home for Christmas and got stuck because of lockdown. I think stuck might be the wrong word, because it was very productive. We got to get 'Ghosting' in the Theatre Royal, we streamed that and it was taken up by a theatre in New York. Being in and around The Theatre Royal, and chatting with the General Manager, Mary Boland - it led to this artistic residency."

Jamie is excited to take up residency, but has many other projects also in the pipeline.

"We've started shooting on season three of Derry Girls. It's crazy exciting to be getting back to see everyone. I'm just back from Canada shooting a western, and that was great. People have always called me a cowboy - and I actually got to be one for two and a half months."
