The Tánaiste Leo Varadkar is proposing new tax breaks for those working from home.

The Business Post is reporting there has been considerations made around increasing an allowance for electricity and heating from 10 per cent of bills currently, to 30 per cent.

However, HR expert Mary Connaughton from CIPD Ireland isn't convinced it would make much of a difference.

"Currently, employees can claim 10% of heating and electricity bills which is a low amount.

"An increase to 30% of the heating and electricity bills will go some way towards helping those costs but it won't be significant and we estimate it's likely to be in the region of €50 per person per year," Connaughton said.

The allowance only applies for the room a person is working in, and for the days they're working from home and it is believed the change could cost up to €8m per year.
