There's calls for the Department of Education to play their part in ensuring the South East Technological University proceeds.

The application from Waterford Institute of Technology and IT Carlow has yet to be submitted.

It's after the memorandum of understanding agreed by management was rejected by unions in Carlow a year ago.

Deputy David Cullinane says he has been raising the issue on a weekly or monthly basis since he was elected to the Seanad in 2011.

He says they are meeting with both presidents today.

Education Minister Joe McHugh says the institutes are in the process of preparing an application.
