South East Mountain Rescue (SEMRA) rescued a walker from the Comeragh mountains yesterday evening.
According to a post on their Facebook page, they were called out by gardaí at 17:08 on Friday to assist a walker on the Coumshingaun loop. Although he was familiar with this hike, he had become disoriented due to bad weather and the darkness.
The first search party set off up the hill at 18:23, followed by a second search party shortly after and a stretcher party.
Rescue 117 was also on the scene, however, the weather conditions meant they could not safely assist and returned to base.
The first search party located the walker at 19:37. He was assessed and although cold, was able to continue walking.
SEMRA members escorted him down off the hill into the Mahon valley where they were met by SEMRA vehicles which transported them back to his car at Kilclooney wood by half eight, and all SEMRA members were off the hill at 21:22.
The organisation says the rescue marked a series of firsts for them: The operations room in the new base extension was used for the first time for a call out; The new mobile base vehicle went on its first call out; Some trainees took part in their first call out with SEMRA.
