A Green Party Senator says policy decisions need to be made now to prevent severe flooding in places like Waterford in years to come.
It's after a study by Newcastle University analysed changes in flooding, droughts and heatwaves for 571 European cities using all climate models.
Their high impact scenario predicts that Waterford, Cork and Derry could see more than 80% increases on peak river flows.
The Waterford Senator says there's nothing too surprising in the report and all planning applications need to take account of this.
Grace O'Sullivan says good work has happened in Waterford but into the future with new developments that are happening along the river all planning must take into account the impacts of flooding in the coming years.
