A Dublin secondary school remains shut this morning to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Students and teachers have been told to restrict their movements after a male student was confirmed as the first case of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland.

He tested positive for the virus after travelling to northern Italy.

It’s understood he’s now being treated in hospital.

The school has been shut down for two weeks.

The Department of Health said that staff and hundreds of students are being treated as close contacts by public health teams.

They’re been asked to restrict their movements until the end of the incubation period.

For confidentiality reasons, the HSE isn’t disclosing the name of the school but it’s been widely circulated online.

Meanwhile, the Department's chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said a bout of Covid-19 would be mild for most people.

For now, the advice is to cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze, avoid touching your face, and wash your hands thoroughly and often.
