Waterford is no longer an outlier when it comes to the availability of free STI testing.

Concerns were raised on WLR in August that Waterford was the only county in Ireland where free tests couldn't be got because the clinic at UHW had been temporarily suspended.

Staff shortages was the reason given.

However, in response to a parliamentary question from local TD, David Cullinane, the HSE says the service has now resumed on a half-time basis.

They say the Department has also provided funding for a Consultant Specialist for STI services in South East Community Healthcare.

It comes as from today, a free online service by the HSE will allow anyone over 17 to get an at-home testing kit for sexually transmitted infections.

Up to now, this service had only been available in certain counties - Waterford not being one of them.

Dr Fiona Lyons, HSE Clinical Lead for Sexual Health says it will allow for people to be more confident in accessing sexual health services.

"It allows people to be in control of things, it allows people to be in greater control of their sexual health and meeting their sexual health needs," she said.

The kits will also break down some of the longstanding barriers that currently exist when it comes to giving a history of your sex life or even just talking about it.
