The Solas Cancer Support Centre in Waterford experienced a 25% growth in client numbers last year.
The charity marked World Cancer Day by revealing that they supported 964 clients in 2019.
Manager Tracy McDaid says it was a particularly busy year:
"We were waiting for today to announce our figures from last year. We're really proud and delighted to say we were able to facilitate an amazing number of 964 clients last year. We're in Waterford five days of the week and we're in Dungarvan on a Monday supporting our west Waterford service."
"We know that the cancer rates are increasing but that's due to an ageing population and a growing population. I think that's it's very much an awareness around people's own mental health; they're recognising the fact that in this difficult time that they need help around the distress that a cancer diagnosis can bring. It's then recognising the fact that our supports are there, that our services are free of charge and that we luckily don't have a waiting list. That combination of our supports has brought that increase about."
