Waterford Sinn Fein have chosen their candidates for the upcoming General Election.

The party held their selection convention last night and will run a minimum of two candidates.

David Cullinane TD and Cllr. Conor McGuinness have been confirmed on the ticket while a third candidate may be chosen at a later date.

Cllr. McGuinness told WLR that it's a great honour to have been chosen to run alongside Deputy Cullinane.

"A hugely proud moment and a terrific honour to have been selected by the membership here of Sinn Féin in Waterford to stand in the general election alongside my really good friend and colleague David Cullinane. I want to pay tribute to David, he is an exemplary public representative, he is, as I've always said to him, front bench material, he is a minister in waiting and I'm very honoured to be running alongside him and I hope that when an election comes we'll be in a very, very strong position here in Waterford."

Cllr. McGuinness believes West Waterford needs a local TD.

"West Waterford, Dungarvan, towns and villages such as Lismore and Cappoquin, Kilmacthomas, Bunmahon, Ardmore, Clashmore must get the fair crack of the whip, get their say, and be seen as being on a par with Waterford City and other parts of the county because I don't know that that has necessarily been the case over recent years, so that's something that I aim to change."
