A section of road in Ballymacarbry has collapsed.

Waterford council says the heavy rain recently caused a culvert to collapse.

Culverts are tunnels allowing streams to pass under roads.

It happened on the L5083, which is opposite the council's depot or Ballymacarbry Primary School.

Senior Roads Engineer, Gabriel Hynes has told WLR News that work is underway to repair it as soon as possible:

"We have a crater in the road of probably a metre in diameter and a metre deep, which has made the road impassible.

"The area crews at the moment are dealing with it and I would be hopeful that the road will certainly be reopened before the end of the week."

There is considerable work to be done there but is expected to be completed over the next couple of days and the road is closed in the meantime.

Many areas around Waterford have experienced flooding in the last few weeks, with the train services being affected because of it on Monday of this week.

"We've had considerable flooding throughout the city and county," said Mr Hynes as assessments of damage continue.

"We've had some edge damage, some culvert damage, and we've had some slippage of embankments.

"So, there's a lot of work to get the roads back to an acceptable standard and we have crews all around the county currently involved in doing the repair and clean-up work after the recent significant rainfall."
