Waterford TD David Cullinane has been nominated by his party as a candidate to chair the new Oireachtas Special Covid-19 Committee.
It's been established to scrutinise and review all the actions taken by Government, State agencies and other authorities in relation to the coronavirus pandemic.
The first meeting takes place tomorrow and it's expected a consensus candidate will be chosen.
However, it's unclear if Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael would support a Sinn Fein nomination.
David Cullinane says their focus is less on who is chairman but on how this committee will work:
"Usually in a committee like this whether it's the Public Accounts Committee or the Finance Committee, they are normally held by somebody from the opposition because that's seen as the appropriate thing to do. I think the same should happen here. I have been in contact with others members of the committee seeking support and we'll put forward somebody for the position of chair. What's most import to us is that the committee does it work and whether I'm chair or a member of the committee, I'll be using that platform to raise issues that are important to the people who voted for Sinn Féin and also obviously those who didn't."
