Waterford's iconic 'Dragon Slayer' sword has been removed for repairs from its location at Bailey's New Street.

The 23-metre-long sculpture was carved by John Hayes, of Special Branch Carvers in December 2017.

Repair works will be carried out by Hayes himself and are estimated to take in the region of 18 months.

Commenting on the works, Morris Conway, Senior Architect with Waterford City and County Council acknowledged the volume of work needed on the piece.

"Years of wear and tear have taken their toll on the structure, but we are pleased that its creator, John Hayes, will treat the sword to return it to its original impressive form."

On completion, the sword will be returned to the city centre.
