Rate of Covid-19 in Waterford City South still highest in the country

Waterford still has the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in Ireland.

Every part of the county has rates higher than the national average of 493 cases per 100,000 people.

The rate in Waterford City South's was 1,486 - three times the national average -  followed by 1,240 in Longford LEA.

There were 334 cases of Covid in City South in the two weeks to Monday, up from 281 in the previous fortnight.

The third highest local electoral area (LEA) was Tramore-Waterford City West at 1,122, that area had 251 cases up from 192.

In all, 1,086 cases were recorded in the county between October 5th and 19th.

Dungarvan is the only area where cases have fallen  - 108 cases in the two weeks to Monday, down from 116 in the previous fortnight.

Cases have risen 124% in Lismore from 29 in the previous fortnight to 65; 77% in Portlaw/ Kilmacthomas with 117 cases up from 66;  and 55% in Waterford City East where cases rose to 211 from 136.

Nationally, the other areas with rates of other 1,000 were Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick in Laois, Piltown in Kilkenny, Ennistimon in Clare, Listowel in Kerry and Kanturk in Cork.

The local electoral area with the lowest rate in the country was Belmullet in Mayo, with just 119 cases per 100,000 people.

Hospital ICUs

NPHET's Philip Nolan says one in every 12 people have tested positive since the pandemic began.

437 Covid patients were in hospital last night - with 88 in intensive care.

Three are in UHW where the number with covid has now fallen to 16, from a high of 26 on Sunday.
