Status Yellow rain warning to come into effect from 6pm

Heavy and persistent flooding is expected in Waterford and Cork this evening, as a Status Yellow weather warning takes effect.

The warning is valid from 5 this evening in Cork until 11pm.

Waterford's weather alert starts at 6 this evening until 2 on Monday morning.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel believes we can expect significant rainfall this evening and in the coming week.

"Heavy rain is likely across the southwest and south of the country in Cork and Waterford, with that possibly extending into parts of Kerry and Wexford also. The rain will spread during Sunday but will be heaviest in the late afternoon and evening. However, it seems likely that through Tuesday and Wednesday, heavier rain will develop across many parts of the Munster and South Leinster, with a real risk of some high level rainfall warnings here due to persistent and heavy falls of rain."
"This would be the third such flooding event in the south within the space of a month. The reason behind this renewed risk is again down to an amplification of the jet stream, as a blocking high pressure results in areas of low pressure and their associated rainfall stalling across the country, with rainfall totals really adding up along southern counties, including Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny."
