An 80 million euro proposal to build 361 houses and apartments in Waterford city has been met by opposition from politicians.

Jackie Greene Construction has applied to An Bord Pleanála for the strategic housing development in Knockboy.

The public can make submissions on the development over the next five weeks until 17th June.

An Bord Pleanála will make a decision on the site in September.

Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald says the development wouldn't be suitable for the area.

He said "In an area where we have traffic congestion every morning, we have problems with schools, we have problems with overcrowding in schools, we
have problems with pupils not being able to access schools. I was out on the rural roads out there which are now becoming rat runs. This is going to make
that situation far worse."

The Knockboy proposal comes on the back of plans to build 324 houses and apartments.

While the Knockboy development will include a creche, Fianna Fáil's Adam Wyse says there isn't enough infrastructure proposed.

He said "You are talking about 700 houses in total for both developments, about fourteen hundred cars being added to an area, so I would urge
the newly formed council that this is one of the primary issues, it might not be in everyone's area but it is in the interest of people living in the City and County.
We need the housing in the area but development of this size with zero planning going into it, zero infrastructure, where we already have a traffic survey that
states that there will be severe traffic issues there by 2030 without these type of developments.
