Dungarvan is hosting its first-ever Polar Plunge tomorrow.

The fundraising event for Special Olympics Munster will see dozens of people jump into the water at Dungarvan's Davitts Quay.

It takes place from 1 pm to 3 pm and there will be lifeguards and support crew on duty for the duration of the event.

Dungarvan Garda Station is coordinating the event and Garda Juvenile Liaison Officer, Aidan McCarthy, is calling on you to 'get freezing for a reason':

"We're going to get as many Gardai as we can down and as many members of the public as we can too.

"Our colleagues in the Fire Service and Ambulance Service are coming

"You can register online at specialolympics.ie or just turn up on the day.

"Under 18s will need a parental consent form signed, which can be done on the day.

"The more the merrier, we're hoping to get a good crowd."

Jennifer Marshall, from Special Olympics, is excited about the event been held in Dungarvan:

"I'm delighted that Dungarvan will be hosting its first ever Polar Plunge this year.

"It's such an important fundraising event for Special Olympics Munster and the support so far from the local community, LETR and the Dungarvan Garda Station, who are coordinating the event, has been amazing and I'm really looking forward a great day".

Tom Scanlon, Carriglea Cairdre Services, spoke of the great work been done by Special Olympics and the importance of fund raising events such as the Polar Plunge. The money goes towards running good quality events for the athletes, facilities for the athletes to use, organizing quality programs for the athletes and it also helps create awareness. He spoke about Special Olympics locally and that they have been participating for 35 years. They have had success at provincial, national and at the Special Olympics World Games.
