A petition has been started in a bid to save public bus services in East Waterford.

Buses in the East will be far less frequent as Suirway are set to cease trading after 123 years.

Locals in Portlaw, Dunmore East, and Passage East will suffer because of this.

The company began trading in 1899 but will run their final service on the 31st of October.

They've cited a lack of supports post-Covid, a 50% drop in passenger numbers, and sustainability considerations as the reason for closure.

Sinn Fein TD David Cullinane says the issue is not unique to Suirway and that the Minister of Transport has to intervene.

Other TD's are on the same page as David, with Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler says the service must be replaced.

"This service is embedded in the communities, whether it's those going to school, those going to colleges, older people just going into Waterford City. It's going to be a massive vacuum and it will have to be filled," she said.

Green Party TD Marc O'Cathasaigh has been engaging with the National Transport Authority on the issue.

He is seeking a meeting with the Director of Public Services and the Head of Service Planning.

"We have six weeks now to lay the ground work for the plan to make sure that there's continuity in public transport services for the people living in those towns," Marc told WLR.

The petition, which was set up yesterday and has a goal of 400 signatures, has 310 as of right now. (3:10pm)
