A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his partner, Daena Walsh, whose body was discovered at an apartment in Midleton, Co Cork, on Friday afternoon.
Adam Corcoran (29), with an address at John Barry House, Connolly Street in Midleton, Co Cork, appeared at a special sitting of Mallow District Court in Co Cork at lunchtime on Sunday.
Mr Corcoran was charged with the murder of 27-year-old Daena Walsh.
Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution was given by Det Garda Cormac O’Bric. He said that when the single charge was formally put to the defendant at Midleton Garda Station at 2:18am on Sunday, Mr Corcoran replied, “No comment."
There was no application for bail in the case as bail cannot be granted at district court level for a murder charge.
Mr Corcoran was represented in court by solicitor Eddie Burke. Mr Burke made an application that his client be given attention when he is in custody. Judge Philip O’Leary agreed to his request and said that Mr Corcoran would receive all necessary medical and or psychiatric assistance in Cork Prison.
Legal aid was granted in the case as Mr Corcoran is unemployed.
Judge O’Leary remanded Mr Corcoran in custody to appear before Mallow District Court again on Tuesday. He will appear in court via video link.
Ms Walsh was pronounced dead at the apartment where she lived off Main Street in Midleton on Friday afternoon after emergency services attended the scene shortly after 4pm.
Members of the fire brigade were also called to the flat as a section of the property was alight.
The scene was preserved for a technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. An incident room was established at Midleton Garda Station, and a senior investigating office has been appointed to lead the investigation. A family liaison officer has also been assigned.
The body of Ms Walsh was taken to Cork University Hospital on Friday. A postmortem examination was carried out on Saturday by Dr Yvonne McCarthy from the State pathologist’s Office. The results of the postmortem were not released for operational reasons.
