Gardaí set to review Waterford case on eve of 20th anniversary

Gardaí in Waterford are set to review a suspected murder case on the eve of the 20th anniversary on Tuesday - July 23rd 2024.

Paiche Onyemaechi Unyolo (25) - who was originally from Malawi - was discovered decapitated in a field near Brenar Bridge in Piltown in Kilkenny on July 23rd 2004.

She was first reported missing to Waterford Garda Station on the 10th of July 2004 - and lived in Saint Herblain Park in Waterford City, having moved to Ireland in 1999.

Her husband Chika Onyemaechi - a Nigerian national - was questioned by Gardaí in 2004 in relation to the suspected murder, but was released without charge.

Onyemaechi did not attend his wife's funeral service and went missing shortly afterwards.

In 2004, Gardaí received an anonymous letter with information related to Paiche's murder, and have since sought out the person who wrote this to come forward.

A man was charged with withholding information in relation to the case in 2006.

A review will now be conducted, with the case remaining unsolved almost 20 years on.
