Stan Phillips is set for his appearance on RTÉ's 'First Dates Ireland' which will be broadcast this week.
At the age of 86, Stan, who is originally from England but has lived in Waterford for over 30 years, becomes the oldest ever contestant on the show.
He is paired on the show with Lorraine Dormer (80) from Offaly.
Stan's wife Bernadette died in January 2023.
Speaking to WLR from the Costa del Sol in Spain where he is currently staying, Stan outlined his reasons for participating in the show.
"When they asked me to be on the show, never having seen the programme, I thought it would be a fun thing to do," he said.
"But I never realised how big it was. I am blown away by the reaction. Perhaps the fact that we are the oldest couple ever to be on it, might have something to do with it. Even over here, on the Costa del Sol, Irish ex pats are stopping me to talk about it."
'First Dates Ireland' will be broadcast on RTÉ Two on Thursday January 23rd at 9.30pm
