Normal People's Paul Mescal spotted holidaying in Dungarvan this weekend

Dungarvan has been given a tourism boost this weekend with the news that Normal People star Paul Mescal is enjoying a staycation there.

The actor, who plays Connell Waldron in the hit TV show was spotted by fans in Co Waterford yesterday evening.

Some took to social media to share photos of themselves with the actor who was happy to have his picture taken with them.

" I was on the supermarket walking along the drinks aisle getting a few beverages and who but Paul Mescal was standing there beside me. I nearly feel through the floor. I waited until he got to the car park and I asked him could I have a picture. He was so lovely, really nice."

And she added: "He was wearing the chain. It was tucked into his top but I could definitely see he was wearing it. It was a Friday evening to remember."

Mayor of Waterford City and County Damien Geoghan says fans of Normal People were very excited to see him and says it was a nice boost for Dungarvan tourism.

But he says, Paul Mescal is no stranger to Waterford.

"He has been in a number of shows in the Theatre Royal with the South Eastern Theatre group. He was the phantom in Phantom of The Opera, he was also in Miss Saigon and it gave him a great start in his career. waterford is a place that he's very fond of. We're delighted to see him. He's a man of impeccable taste obviously to spend his time around here."

NORMAL PEOPLE  became the most-watched show ever to air on RTÉ Player.

The BBC drama series, based on Sally Rooney's novel of the same name,  racked up over 3.3 million views on RTÉ Player since it first aired at the end of April.

Normal People is now set to be shown in over 20 countries all over the world after the international rights were sold.
