A local advocacy group for people with disabilities has said there are currently no taxis in Dungarvan, which can take wheelchair users.

The problem was presented to Waterford Disability Network, who are undertaking a survey to analyse the current situation here in the coming weeks.

Jo Creegan from the group, says there is a particular problem in West Waterford.

"It came to our attention two weeks ago that in Dungarvan that there is absolutely no wheelchair taxi to be found in the whole town.

"We had a number of people inquiring about trying to take one of the residents of a nursing home there, out for dinner or a spin with a family member.

"There was absolutely no taxi that we could find that has a wheelchair service in the town of Dungarvan, " Jo said.

Wait times

Meanwhile, a Waterford man who was out at night in the city recently was told that he would have to wait up to two hours for a wheelchair accessible taxi.

Karl Cretzin who lives in Ballygunner says he had to make his own way home at night in his wheelchair last week due to the shortage.

He told Damien Tiernan on Déise Today about the distressing situation he found himself in, in Waterford city.

"Two or three taxi companies said they had no taxis available while one company told me it would take at least an hour and a half to two hours to get a taxi.

"I had no choice other than to make my way home in my wheelchair all the way to Ballygunner, Karl said.

In 2019, a WDN survey found there were between 30 and 38 wheelchair accessible taxis across Waterford City and county.

But Jo Creegan from Waterford Disability Network told Déise Today the problem is that a lot of taxis only work during the daylight hours.

"A huge amount of the companies that offer wheelchair services are committed to and from hospital appointments and daycare centres during the day so they don't work at night.

"The survey was conducted before the pandemic hit so we are going to conduct another survey to see what is the actual situation is at present and how many taxis are actually available," she said.
