Sufficient funding is a barrier to extending the Prom in Tramore.
That's the view of Waterford Council following a request to look at extending the Prom down as far as the lower car park.
At the April meeting of the Metropolitan District, Councillor Donal Barry requested a feasibility study on the Prom extension.
He says it would significantly enhance tourism.
"Given the increasing popularity of Tramore in recent years, and people from surrounding areas walking the Prom all year round and not just during the summer, I'm calling on the Council to carry out a feasibility study to look at increasing the length of the Prom as far as the end of the new car park," he said.
"This would allow proper access from the car park to the beach."
Cllr Barry believes such a move would "really bring Tramore to another level with regards to tourism".
Gabriel Hynes, Senior Engineer with Waterford Council, says that while the Prom extension would make sense, the budget isn't there for it.
"The issue is having capital funding to do so. It's not in our capital programme," he said.
"There would certainly be merit in extending the Prom - but funding would be the issue."
