New owner for derelict pub in Ballybeg

A Waterford Fianna Fail Councillor says the former Ryan's Bar in Ballybeg is an ideal location for social housing for older people.

The pub was destroyed by a fire eight years ago and has remained derelict since.

Jason Murphy says the property changed hands a week ago.

"It's moved to a local developer. He's very keen to carry out a development here.

"He met with the council, I met with him and the council on Monday.

"He wants to put together a development of accommodation for the elderly, for retired people.

"It's called a turn-key project. They developer will develop the area; the council will then take it off him and they will allocate [the accommodation]

Councillor Murphy hopes that there will be some amenities as part of the development.

"From taking to the developer and the council what they would like is something like a chemist - we don't have a chemist out here, a doctor's surgery and maybe a community space that the council would take on.

"There would be a small amount of retail space confined to what I said.

"Primarily this will be a residential area, primarily we are hoping it will be for the elderly."

Nigel O'Sullivan is the owner of Spar in Ballybeg

He says he's "thrilled to hear the news".

"It's been an absolute eyesore, it's been derelict for years.

"It will be great for the area.

"It's a fabulous area, the people of Ballybeg deserve to have a doctor's surgery or chemist."
