A €1.2m steel and glass canopy now covers the one-time market and ties together the area which has a high concentration of bars, restaurants and nightlife.
The recently-completed public realm project has been spearheaded by Waterford City & Council with support from the European Union’s Regional Development Fund through the Southern Regional Assembly.
The wider programme also covers Lady Lane, Colbeck St, Michael St, Arundel Square and John St with a view to improving public spaces through more of the city centre to the standard of the Viking Triangle.
Designed by Waterford-based DHB architects and with Murphy International Ltd. of Kildare as main contractors, the dramatic triangular steel and glazed canopy structure sits on nine steel columns that are positioned to still facilitate certain traffic in the area.
